Mary Margaret O’Neill/Kids Are Heroes, Inc.
Founder
When MaryMargaret O’Neill was just nine years old, she founded the Kids Are Heroes® organization with some help from her dad. Intended to be strictly a father-daughter project, it quickly grew into something far bigger than just the two of them. Kids Are Heroes is an incubator for very young social entrepreneurs. By showcasing children who are making a difference in their community, they are empowering other children to enrich their own lives as well as the lives of others. They now boast more than 450 children on their website from 18 countries who are drilling water wells in Africa, building homes in Haiti, or simply filling up their local food banks. MaryMargaret has been featured on the site 5 times, for donating pajamas to the homeless shelter, food and blankets to the animal shelter, helping to clean animals from the Gulf Oil Spill, providing stuffed animals to young cancer patients and donating 250 pre-loaded MP3 players to children in youth hospitals. She is the spokesperson for Kids Are Heroes, delivering speeches all over the country to local civic groups and large organizations. She had an appearance on the Ricki Lake Show in 2012. She emcees all of our events. She is now a junior in high school here in Georgia and is also a nail artist, video editor/producer and all around teenager

Jake Johnson/Beaux Up
Founder
Recently named the winner of Warren Buffett’s “Grow Your Own Business” challenge, Jake Johnson is stepping back into the entrepreneurial world with his patent-pending product Beaux Up. Jake and his sister are partners in their new business Beaux Up bow ties, an edgy twist on the classic self-tie bow tie where bow tie halves, made from upcycled vintage tie silk, can be interchanged on a unique clip allowing a completely customizable experience for the wearer. Jake was the creator of the Beaux Up idea, but he also enjoys marketing and the business of entrepreneurship. Jake is a tenth grader at River Bluff High School in Lexington, SC, but he has been involved in business from a much earlier age. At age 8, he and his sisters came up with the idea for Flipoutz, a silicone bracelet that holds coins that kids can trade and track online at flipoutz.com. As part of Flipoutz, Jake appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank and lived to tell about it! He and his sisters were also featured on PBS Biz Kids and were nominated for ChiTAG’s Young Inventor of the Year. No stranger to entrepreneurship and the working world, Jake started his career as an actor at age seven. Among his favorite roles are the youngest “Ricky Bobby” in “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Lucas Moran” on six seasons of Lifetime’s “Army Wives.” Jake plays soccer and football, runs cross country and track, plays piano, and has been a national finalist in the National History Day contest in both the performance and the documentary categories. Jake believes entrepreneurial activities are an investment in the future and he enjoys sharing his ideas with other business minded kids. He is a part of Independent Youth’s Teen Entrepreneurship Network and he travels the country sharing his knowledge and experience with other kids. Because of the growing interest in youth entrepreneurship, Jake and his family are creating online training for young entrepreneurs and their parents. A favorite quote is by Warren Buffett who said, “Someone is sitting in the shade today, because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” Jake’s future goals include planting more trees of his own while helping others kids do the same.
